Have you ever noticed that little kids never say they’re just 4?
They’re 4 and a half.
Or 5 and a half.
At least mine do.
When you’re little, six months feels like a really big deal. It’s another milestone, another reason to celebrate, and another reminder that they’re growing up just a little too fast.
It’s common for moms to recognize when their baby is 6 months old, and 18 months old, and honestly we just kept it going and recognized all half birthdays with a few little extra fun details!
Both of my kids have summer birthdays, so when they were in preschool (and now in regular school), their classes celebrated their half birthdays during the school year!
Our family doesn’t do anything too over-the-top, but when I get the opportunity to celebrate any milestone in my kids’ lives, I’m going to take it!
How We Celebrate Half Birthdays
Keeping it simple is one of my themes in parenting, because it really doesn’t take much to make a child feel celebrated.
Here’s what we do for half birthdays.
You Are Special Today Plate
We always start the day with a favorite breakfast and pull out our family’s “You Are Special Today” plate.
If you grew up with one of these plates, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about. My mom used ours whenever one of us had a birthday, and now getting to continue that tradition with my own kids makes it even more meaningful.
I think this is something my kids will always remember!
My family growing up had the traditional red one, but I chose the colorful one for our family now! One of my besties makes the most beautiful hand-lettered custom birthday plates! You could totally use it for birthdays and half-birthdays. You can find them here.

The Cutest Half Birthday Candle
One of my favorite Amazon finds for half birthdays is this “1/2” birthday candle.

It’s such a fun little detail, and we’ve reused the same candle year after year. Whether we’re celebrating with pancakes, muffins, donuts, or a small cake after dinner, adding the half birthday candle instantly makes it feel special.
Reuse Birthday Decorations
There’s no need to buy all new decorations for a half birthday! I like pulling out a few things from their actual birthday celebration earlier in the year. It’s a great chance to re-use and get some more life out of things you already bought:
- Their birthday banner
- Leftover plates and napkins
- Birthday cake topper or decorations
It instantly brings back memories from their birthday while making the day feel festive without spending extra money.
Add a Happy Half Birthday Banner
I also found a simple Happy Half Birthday banner on Amazon that we reuse every year.
It takes less than a minute to hang up, but seeing it when my kids wake up always makes them smile.

(I can’t find a plain one anymore! I’d just toss the bears or use them for something else!)
The Cutest Half Birthday Cake Idea
One of my favorite half birthday traditions is making a half birthday cake, and it’s much easier than it looks!
Start with a round cake, then cut it in half. Frost one half like you normally would, then flip the other half over and stack it on top. Once you cover the whole thing with frosting, it looks like a perfectly adorable half of a cake, but it’s actually a double-layer cake inside!

I have made this myself a few times, but my photos are never this good! Thank you, Celebrating Sweets for the pretty photo!
Top it with the “1/2” birthday candle, sprinkles, or your child’s favorite decorations, and you’ve got a cake that’s simple, inexpensive, and so much fun. My kids absolutely love it, and I have a feeling it’s one of those little traditions they’ll remember long after they’ve outgrown half birthdays.
If baking isn’t your thing, you could totally do the same idea with a store-bought round cake. It’s all about making the day feel special… not making it complicated!

These are our favorite dye-free cake ingredients! These “Softies” sprinkles are the best!!
Serve “Half” of Everything
This might be my kids’ favorite part of the day because it’s so silly!
For a half birthday, I like to serve anything cut in half. It takes literally no extra planning but it always gets a smile.
A few fun ideas:
- Half a bagel or donut for breakfast
- Half a pancake stack
- Half a sandwich for lunch
- Half an apple or banana for a snack
- Half a cookie after dinner
- Half a cupcake
You can even cut pizza, grilled cheese, waffles, or fruit into fun halves and remind them, “It’s your half birthday!”
Kids think it’s hilarious, and it’s one of those simple traditions that makes the day feel different without spending any extra money.

Why I Love Celebrating Half Birthdays
Half birthdays aren’t about gifts or elaborate parties.
They’re about slowing down long enough to celebrate another season of childhood.
Kids spend so much of these early years counting the months until they’re “five and a half” or “six and a half.” I love meeting them in that excitement instead of brushing it aside.
Childhood goes by quickly. If I get another excuse to celebrate my kids, make life a little more fun, light a candle, and tell them how loved they are…I’ll take it every time.
